New Year, New Dog, New Work...New BLOG!

NEW YEAR: I love the new year...it's the time that I look at the past year's successes and failures, and begin to think about my goals for the upcoming year... a time to wipe the slate clean, and get down to business!

NEW DOG: Near the end of last year, we lost our sweet old bulldog; Emma. Emma has been a big part of our lives for a long time, so it was very tough. We hadn't planned to get another dog for quite some time, but our other bulldog; Oliver, seemed to become very depressed and lonely. At the end of November, we brought home LOLA...she has definitely injected energy back into the household and into Oliver! I forgot how much work puppies are, but it is great, nonetheless!

NEW WORK: I already have lots of great things planned for next year, so I am hoping to keep busy making, and really want to try this year, to focus on making work that I love creating. I have recently been developing these sculptural 'basket' forms in preparation for a big show I have coming up in May of this year....I can't wait to work on these some more!

NEW BLOG: Finally...I've just noticed that ceramic legend: Robin Hopper has started a new blog! I'm sure all of the potters know who he is, because of the numerous books, dvd's and countless articles that he has authored, but I urge you to follow his blog regularly. I'm sure it will be filled with witty humour, thoughtful musings and priceless information for any potter or person who reads it...enjoy! Visit his new blog here!

It has long been a goal of mine, to have a book of my past work produced. Finally...after lots of hard work from a number of people...it has happened!

Time Flies!

Well, it seems that I have been missing in action from my blog for the past four months! Truth is, that things have been crazy busy lately, and I have been much more active at updating my facebook page than my blog.

I just returned home from an AMAZING workshop in Oregon last week, and my head is spinning with new ideas! More on that later....

I have lots of terrific things happening in the next year or so, which I am preparing for...sometimes I wonder how I am going to finish everything. I somehow always manage to meet my deadlines, and have learned to not stress about everything like I used to...it takes the fun out of it....if it doesn't happen the way I imagined it, so be it!

I've posted a few images of some new pieces that I have been working on.
The painting, which is titled 'Putnam Clearing' is a bit of a departure from my past work, in that it is a little more vibrant, but I had great fun painting it.

The new etched pottery pieces are also a little different for me, but still have that organic, natural aesthetic that I try to achieve in my ceramic pieces.

I was very surprised to find these new pieces in a recent issue of 'The Globe and Mail' in the Style section! The article was 'Top 10 fall Design Trends' Awesome surprise!

I just came across this image of my piece that was in the TOAE Award Winners Exhibition at FCP Gallery awhile back. There is a great slideshow of images on the TOAE website, and I encourage you to have a look....there is some pretty amazing work.

On another note, I have had inquiries about whether or not I am participating in the TOAE show this year. I decided not to enter this year, as I am working on some interesting projects, and feel the need to concentrate on those. I will most likely be applying the following year and hopefully I will be accepted once again! ( Fingers crossed!!!)

On my way to Thunder Bay!

Early Thursday morning I'm off to catch a flight to Thunder Bay for what promises to be a busy but great long weekend. Thursday evening I'm participating in an exhibition opening, Friday evening I'm giving an artist's talk at Lakehead University, then all day Saturday and Sunday I'm giving a workshop to the Thunder Bay Potter's Guild at Lakehead. I'm looking forward to meeting new people and making new pottery friends, and I'm especially looking forward to the food....Potter's potlucks are always AMAZING!

I hear I need to wear lots of layers....Thunder Bay can be VERY COLD!!!

When I return home late Sunday evening, I can finally take some time to prepare for JAPAN! woo hoo!

new year; new collections

Every year I try to work on some new collections, and this year seems to be all about white, grey, black and more variations of grey! (Perhaps it is the influence of the record amounts of snow that we have recently received in Southwestern Ontario !?!)
I think to date, this is my favourite pottery collection...I love the smooth, satiny feel of the white glaze and the paintings I could easily live with for a long time....anyone who has been to my home knows how much I love variations of grey, black and white.
Some pieces of my new collection are available at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art in Toronto, and my new paintings are available at Canvas Gallery in Toronto.

A HUGE 'THANK YOU' to RAJATON!

There is an amazing group from Finland called 'RAJATON'. I have had the great fortune to meet them on a few occasions, and attend a couple of their concerts. From the first day I heard their music, it inspired me, and I often listen to their music while painting or throwing on the potter's wheel.

On October 6th of this year, Rajaton released a new album, and guess whose painting is on the album cover?....This is amazing for me, as their music has influenced a lot of my work (If you know their music, I am sure you will recognize the influence.)

A bit about Rajaton from their website:
'In their native Finland, Rajaton is a bona fide pop phenomenon, successfully bridging the gap that often exists between classical and mainstream convention. The group has released 11 different albums. In 2003, Rajaton rose to n:o 2 on the charts with their album Joulu ("Christmas") which has to date sold double platinum in Finland. Building on the momentum of this mainstream success, in 2006, the group recorded Rajaton sings ABBA with Lahti Symphony Orchestra, an album which topped the charts in Finland and sold platinum in a month.

In 2010 Rajaton celebrates 13 years of music-making with one double platinum, three platinum and eight gold records in Finland to their credit. Their latest album, Tarinoita, is yet another significant milestone in Rajaton's story, as it is their first fully self-produced album, released in October, 2010, by their own label Boundless Records.'

BURLINGTON ART CENTRE EXHIBITION

I was very pleased to be asked to exhibit at the Burlington Art Centre, from May 8, until August 1, 2010 alongside my good friend Shirley Clifford, who is also from Ingersoll. The exhibition was organized by Curator of the Collection; Jonathan Smith, M.F.A., who is one of Canada's foremost authorities on ceramics. Although the show is now open, the official opening and artists' tour and talk is on June 6th, from 2-4pm. I have posted a couple of images of the exhibition installation, but this is only a small portion of the work.

About the Burlington Art Centre: A multi-faceted facility nestled next to Lake Ontario in the heart of Burlington, Ontario. It is truly a centre for art, supporting artists, staging exhibitions, nurturing a nationally and internationally recognized ceramic collection, and serving the community.

Permanent Collection: From its early foundation, the BAC also expanded to become home to a permanent collection of ceramics, vigorously acquired since 1983. The BAC Permanent Collection of Contemporary Canadian Ceramics has achieved international recognition and is the largest such collection in Canada. It continues to grow in size and artistic depth. ( I was very pleased to find out that I have a few pieces included in this terrific collection!)

Masterworks Southwest-Touring Exhibition

Sour Cherry Pottery- Tony & Sheila Clennell

I remember, more than 10 years ago, when I was just a newbie in the clay world, seeing a gnarly and crusty woodfired teapot at an exhibition opening, hosted by FUSION: The Ontario Clay and Glass Association. I had seen lots of pottery and ceramics, but this was different...It had a soul, and for some reason, I was very drawn to it.

The image of that gnarly teapot has stuck with me throughout the years, and I often would think of it, when working on my own pieces. I still strive to capture that special 'something' in my work, that I saw in that particular teapot so many years ago.

That teapot was created by Tony and Sheila Clennell of Beamsville, Ontario. In my humble opinion, Tony and Sheila create some of the most successful ceramics around, and they are the ones that a serious or new collector needs to have in their collection. I have many of their pieces, and I never tire of living with them.

While surfing design blogs for inspiration, I came across 'Poppyseed Creative Living', a blog by Jelena Pticek of Toronto. Jelena does a great job of reviving tired furniture into one-of-a-kind statement pieces.
The black and white vase used in one of the vignette shots caught my eye... it was a piece I made some time ago while I was living in Toronto. Seeing it again makes me want to revisit the specialized firing process.

Last Monday evening, I was watching 'INCOME PROPERTY', one of my favourite HGTV programs ( I think I have about 10 favourites! ) when something caught my eye. I noticed two paintings hanging in the makeover space, and thought, " those paintings look very familiar...could it be?!? " After some investigating, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they were indeed my paintings...what a treat & terrific surprise!

I was very pleased to have an article about me and my work included in the current issue of FUSION Magazine, and even more surprised to have my work used as the cover shot!
FUSION is the Ontario Clay and Glass Association, and they do a wonderful job of promoting current happenings in clay and glass in Canada and beyond. They are a not-for-profit organization, and host exhibitions, guest lectures and terrific visiting artist workshops. Early on, FUSION inspired me to keep working in clay, and I remember flipping through FUSION Magazine hoping to one day be included in it.
I urge any clay and glass artist in Canada and elsewhere to visit FUSION's website, become a member, and support this great organization. It is through them that Canadian clay and glass artists can continue to have a strong identity and voice.

Back in late October 2008, I was filmed for a segment on episode #1008 of HGTV's Pure Design, hosted by Samanth Pynn. I was commissioned to make a large wall piece for their makeover space. I must say that before the episode aired...I was a little nervous, but those nerves quickly faded once I saw what a great job they did! Thank you to all involved, and a special thank you to Samantha Pynn.

Exhibition in China!

I was very honoured to be asked to participate in an International ceramics Exhibition in Jingdezhen, China, this coming October at Sanbao Ceramics Institute. The exhibition is a representation of Canadian ceramics including the likes of fellow Canadian Ceramic Artists:Bruce Cochrane, Eric Wong, Liz Willoughby, Scott Barnim, Sheila Clennell, Susan Low-Beer, Judith Graham and Ingrid Nicolai, to name just a few. FUSION CONFERENCE & GARDINER MUSEUM EXHIBITION

I can't say much yet, but I just received word today that the above painting, from my current winter tree series was used on set in an upcoming TV drama pilot for CBS Paramount. The show is based in Manhattan & stars a former Grey's Anatomy intern!
I'll post more details when I can. How fun!

EXPERIMENTAL PAINTINGS!

As spring approaches, I always feel a need to refresh my house. I was tired of looking at the old painting in my bathroom, and thought I'd try something new and spontaneous, and I love the result! I think it suits my bathroom, as it reminds me of water and waves and the upcoming Spring thaw. I've included a couple of photos of it to share. (Along with my sidekick Oliver who appears very unimpressed!) I'm looking forward to experimenting some more with similar paintings, and thinking of incorporating encaustic for a richer, layered opaque effect.

A PREVIEW OF MY NEW COLLECTION

I have just finished the pieces for my new collection, which was inspired by a recent trip to the Caribbean...a special place that I have very fond memories of. :)
I love the look of this collection, and the random, spotted white surface reminds me of coral, and natural surfaces that have been encrusted by small barnacles and worn smooth over time.

Narrow-necked bottles, thinly-thrown bowls, and rounded vessels make up this collection.

My new collection will be available mid-March at the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art.

I have always felt that it is extremely important to represent your work as professionally as possible. I was pleased once again to have a piece of my work used for the Gardiner Museum outdoor signage. (Turquoise bowl in the lower portion of the sign). I must thank the staff at the museum for all of their support. They always display my work beautifully. THE INFLUENCE OF A COLD CANADIAN WINTER!

This winter has been extremely cold, and record amounts of snow in Ontario. Although I generally don't enjoy the cold, I do appreciate how inspiring it is for me as a artist. My new paintings seem to echo the cold Canadian landscape. I love the tactile feel of these paintings and am looking forward to experimenting further.
(OK...the crowd painting isn't winter, but I like it!)

NEW YORK OR BUST!

I'm off to New York very very early on Boxing Day morning...hopefully!
With the crazy weather, airport delays and the incredible amounts of snow lately, I am still determined to get there!
While I am there, I am very much looking forward to some R&R, great food, and fun with friends. I am also planning on taking as many photos as I can. I have been experimenting with some new mixed media paintings in preparation for the new year, and can't wait to use my trip to New York in winter as inspiration for my new body of work! I'll post some new images when they are completed.
This will be my last post until 2009! It's been a great year!

SOFA CHICAGO & CANADIAN ARTIST PETER POWNING!

This past November, I once again flew to Chicago to visit the SOFA Expo (Sculpture Objects & Functional Art Fair). I realize that I write frequently about this, but I feel that is the best around, and it is the premier expo of Sculptural Objects & Functional Art. If you want to see the best ceramics, sculpture and glass... it is very much worth the trip. (Besides...who would pass up a trip to Chicago?!?!)

While I was there, I was looking at the Lafrenière & Pai Gallery booth, which is one of the galleries which represents the work of my all-time favourite ceramic and mixed media artist; fellow Canadian Peter Powning. From my beginnings in working with clay, Peter Powning has been the artist whom I most admire, and has reached a level in his career which I hope to one day achieve. He unknowingly has had the biggest impact on me as an artist.
I was chatting with the gallery owner about Mr. Powning's work, and she informed me he was at the show. She then introduced me to him...that was the highlight of the show for me and made this trip to SOFA the best yet. Upon speaking with him, I found out that he had purchased a piece of mine for his collection from the Gardiner Museum in Toronto. That was the icing on the cake!

I recently visited on of my galleries to take some reference photos of my paintings, and loved how they were displayed alongside the ceramic pieces of other Canadian Ceramic Artists
I love how the bird painting looks paired with Sarah Link's sculptural eggs.
The second painting is paired with a figurative sculpture by Reid Weir of Newfoundland.
I love the third painting (and am thinking of keeping it for myself!) The large ceramic sculptural shoe is by well-known British Columbia ceramic artist Kinichi Shigeno.

PAINTING - SEPTEMBER 2008 EXHIBITION

I just recently completed this large painting for my solo show in September 2008. This is the first piece I finished for the exhibition, and am working on sculptural pieces to be displayed with my paintings . These new sculptural pieces will be much different than previous work, but I am looking forward to developing them into a cohesive body...I am finding it so interesting to see how my painting and ceramics feed off of one another in both process and product. I am looking forward to seeing how they relate together in a gallery setting when they are completed and hung.

NEW YEAR, NEW DIRECTION

With the start of a new year, I always seem to evaluate what I have been doing, and where I have been heading in regards to my work. The latter part of last year was very much like this, as I desperately wanted to spend more time on my sculptural pieces, but found I was much too busy with orders to do this.
As a result, I have decided to take this year to work on my paintings, and more sculptural expressive pieces. I will not be supplying as many galleries for the next year. I have a major show coming up in September, and am looking forward to working on that. I have added a couple of photos of new pieces that I recently made. This week, I began working on a few more, and can already see an exciting progression. I would love to hear what you think about this new work.

INTERNATIONAL CHAWAN EXHIBITION - BELGIUM

I came across this website for an exhibition I participated in a couple of years ago. It was traveling exhibition in Belgium that was sponsored by the Japanese Embassy in Belgium and the Province of Antwerp.
8 people from Canada participated, a number of them friends of mine.

The focus of the exhibition was the Chawan (Oriental Teabowl). The website is very interesting, and has a lot of very good information about the tea ceremony and Chawans.

PAINTINGS!

Although most of you know me as a ceramic artist, you may be interested to find out that painting takes up a large amount of my time. Before ceramics, I had always wanted to be a painter. It was through ceramics that I found my own voice, and also my own style. Paintings came again later, and they seem to echo the same feel of my ceramics.

The above photograph is one of my favourite paintings. The long-necked vases are by Mary fox of British Columbia, and the Bronze Sculpture is by George Shadford, also form Ingersoll!

I LOVE NEW YORK - INSPIRATIONS

I absolutely love visiting New York City, and I try to get there as often as I can. Creatively, I find it to be the most inspiring city. I love the architecture, and juxtaposition of the sleek modern elements with the worn, gritty surfaces. I try to capture that feeling in my paintings and ceramics. I am looking forward to returning this Christmas.

SOFA EXPO, CHICAGO - 2007

This past November, I flew to Chicago to visit the SOFA EXPO (International Sculpture Objects & Functional Art Exposition).
The SOFA EXPO is one of the best Sculptural Expositions in existence. I wanted to see it, to get inspired for my exhibition next September (More about that later)
I must admit that I was extremely impressed, and seeing this Exposition was exactly what I needed. My new work is heavily influenced by this show, and I am very excited about my new direction. As a result, I have taken a sabbatical for the next year to work on my new pieces and new direction. I will, however, have some new work at a few galleries throughout the year, and will be posting news and images on this site. I also hope to participate in the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition again in 2008.

I was very excited to see, and purchase a piece from one of my favourite sculptors, Mark Chatterley. Meeting Mark was amazing! His work has a dark, unearthed, organic feel to it...just what I love.

GARDINER MUSEUM - TORONTO

If you're in Toronto, be sure to visit the newly renovated Gardiner Museum.
They have incredible ceramic exhibitions and Jamie Kennedy's Restaurant at the Gardiner is wonderful.
My work is carried regularly in their shop, which is always a very popular destination.

I was fortunate to have my work included in their outdoor signage. You can see in the photographs, a shallow dish of mine in the lower portion of the sign.
